Bryncoch 5th scout group dig deep to help raise funds for Ukraine: Scout hike1
  • Welsh Water colleague and Scout leader Mike Loyns works with local community group to raise £1500 in vital funds to support the people of Ukraine impacted by the war.

Bryncoch 5th Neath Scout group, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, led by Welsh Water colleague Mike Loyns, recently took part in an archaeological dig at Neath Abbey Ironworks with CADW to raise funds for Ukraine. The scout group were joined by ITV’s Coast and Country who filmed the community group carrying out their activities. After their exciting dig, the team took to local mountain Drumau where they hiked 10k to see the ancient landmark Carreg Bica.

Mike Loyns, Scout leader and Asset Engineer at Welsh Water, said: “The event was a great success, and we were able to raise money for such an important cause. The group have been eagerly involved in all our fundraising activities, with this one being an extremely interesting one for the children to be involved with. This is just a small sacrifice that we can do as a community group to give back to those suffering in Ukraine. We are proud of every single one of the children and the effort they are putting in to raise money for those who are in need.”

This fundraising event is one of many activities that the Bryncoch 5th Neath Scout group, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are involved with. Recently, they received funding from Welsh Water’s Community Fund to help transform the grounds of the Scout Hall and improve the biodiversity of the local area by building bug hotels, nature areas and hedgehog homes.

Claire Roberts, Head of Community Engagement at Welsh Water, said: “The Welsh Water Community Fund is pleased to support a diverse range of community projects.  Supporting this worthy cause encouraging the future generation to become responsible citizens is very heart warming, especially the additional fund-raising event supporting the crisis in Ukraine. As a not-for-profit organisation, customers are at the heart of everything we do, and the funding allows us to give something back to the community that we are investing in.”

Welsh Water’s Community Fund is a chance for communities to boost fundraising efforts for good causes in their area. If you live in an area where work is taking place – and you’re fundraising for projects to benefit the community – you could receive funding from Welsh Water up to a value of £1,000.
